What is a WHOIS record?
A WHOIS record is the public registration data for a domain name. It usually shows when the domain was registered, who the registrar is, expiry date, name servers, and contact info. ICANN requires every accredited registrar to publish at least the basic technical fields, although personal contact details are now usually masked behind privacy services.
Why look up WHOIS data?
SEOs check WHOIS to assess a domain age before buying it for an SEO project, to find expiry dates on competitor domains, and to confirm name servers when a site is acting strange. Domain investors use it to find drop dates, while developers use it to identify which registrar holds a domain when a transfer is needed.
How does this WHOIS lookup work?
- Type the domain you want to inspect, like example.com.
- Click Lookup, the tool talks to the right WHOIS server based on the top level domain.
- Read the parsed fields above and the raw response below.
When is WHOIS data unavailable?
Some country level domains restrict public WHOIS to local users, and many registrars now hide owner contact details to comply with privacy laws like GDPR. You can still see the technical info such as registrar name, dates, and name servers in almost every case.
